Amy

Amy works shifts at a local supermarket. Every other moment of the day, though, is spent on her City and Guilds course in Art and Animation in the Gaming Industry.

Amy plans to send her CV to game design companies as soon as she has her certificate, determined to work in the gaming industry and to be the best mum she can be.

Nasreen
is a social housing tenant

Nasreen works in a school office and is a tireless community volunteer. She has helped to run a Big Iftar for the last 3 years, welcoming all from the local community to celebrate together.

Nasreen is a board member of her housing association.

Sarah
is a social housing tenant

Sarah  is a published author and is busy with the novel and working as Creative Director of a gift product company.

Sarah had been a pub landlady who had been declared bankrupt and was consequently homeless, recovering from the turmoil she took a Foundation degree at Ruskin College, Oxford, in her 40s, followed by a BA at London Metropolitan University.

Paul
is a social housing tenant

Paul was a Royal military-trained driving instructor in Corps of Signals, he was also employed in a liaison role, providing skilled RAF Reservists.

Paul now supports soon-to-be ex-Service personnel, from those discharged on medical grounds right up to the highest ranks leaving after decades under the flag.

Courtney
is a social housing tenant

Courtney, aka Secret Santa Oxfordshire, started her festive collection five years ago after her great grandmother died in hospital.

She appealed to local people to donate toys, books and food and  received a staggering 5,000 gifts last year and holds a wrapping party, where local people come to pack gifts. Courtney has also won a British Citizens Award.

Paige
is a social housing tenant

Paige chose to study media production at university and for the past two summers Paige has helped Soha Housing with their film production.

Now splitting her time between home and university, she’s learning how to produce features for TV, radio and film and plans to take a Masters specialising in film so she can work on documentaries.

Dreena
is a social housing tenant

Dreena went to Ruskin College, Oxford, to become qualified in social work. From there, she managed a number of Oxfordshire County Council homes for adolescents and then set up a County Council unit providing support for adolescents living at home.

The pace of life hasn’t eased up much for Dreena in retirement, as she is involved in her new community.

Josie
is a social housing tenant

Josie worked for one of the leading organisations training missionaries for the UK and was ordained to be Sister Josie. She returned from working overseas to build up a church before “retiring” back to Didcot.

Josie has since become involved in helping to create and sustain  the Great Western Park (GWP) Community Church in Didcot.

Richard
is a social housing tenant

Richard trained as a chef in London and then worked in top kitchens around the world. His last job in Dubai saw him cooking camel curry for Sheikhs and won chef of the year three times.

After a car accident put paid to his career, Richard studied for a Foundation degree in Law at Ruskin College, Oxford. He contributes to Tenants’ Times, the newspaper by tenants, for tenants.

Tom
is a social housing tenant

Tom joined the RAF aged 17 and was stationed all around the world. He trained in Canada, served in the Suez Conflict, worked across the Middle East, Cyprus and Libya and was seconded to the Pakistani Air Force.

In 1969, Squadron Leader Tom won the Daily Mail Transatlantic Air Race, setting the fastest time on the London to New York. Today he lives in an Extra Care apartment .

Saleha
is a social housing tenant

Saleha Jafrin grew up on the Clichy Estate in Tower Hamlets and is Chair of the community food garden on the estate.

She worked with neighbours to turn a misused park into the Clichy Rupali garden, where they have 10 raised beds for growing vegetables and herbs.

Larry
is a social housing tenant

Legs” Larry was the original drummer in the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and performed on the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” film.

Larry has partied with John Lazar, Jack Nicholson, Groucho Marx and Mae West, and tap danced at 50,000-seater stadiums when on a coast-to-coast US tour with Elton John.

Chris
is a social housing tenant

Chris is the Chair of the Board and a tenant of Homes in Sedgemoor. Chris has been a resident of Sedgemoor for 18 years.

During his time at Homes in Sedgemoor he has had many successes and achievements, including Homes in Sedgemoor winning the UK Complaints Handling Awards 2017, being placed 4th in the Top 50 Social Landlords awards and achieving the Investors in People Gold Award. Chris was also nominated for Tenant of the Year at the TPAS South Awards.

Stuart
is a social housing tenant

Stuart lives at Hendra Park, a supported housing scheme in Cornwall for residents with learning difficulties.

Moving into his own studio apartment gave Stuart the chance to have some real independence, with the security of a support worker on site to assist. Recently, Stuart took part in a painting activity and the art produced now hangs on the walls of the scheme.

Keeleigh
is a social housing tenant

Keeleigh and her family are residents of Homes in Sedgemoor. As a child, Keeleigh suffered from a very rare kidney and liver disease.

In 2010, she underwent a life-saving transplant operation, and since then, she has recovered and gone on to participate in the National Transplant Games. Keeleigh brought home a gold medal from the 2015 Transplant Games, as well as medals for shotput, bowling and tug-of-war.

Graham
is a social housing tenant

Graham Giles is a retired drag queen, known as Dame Gracy, and lives in Victoria Square (a retirement housing complex for the over 60s).

He is a founding member of the Manchester Mardi Gras, now known as the annual Pride Event. He attends every year, still dresses up on special occasions and has raised thousands of pounds for charity by performing in drag. He is also a supporter of Northwards’ Retired no Expired campaign which celebrates North Manchester’s most inspiring pensioners.

Alvine
is a social housing tenant

Alvine is a full-time volunteer and Chairperson of the Migrant Empowerment Group in Wolverhampton. The group helps refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to feel welcomed in the city.

Just some of the activities Alvine organises include: a Christmas party for asylum seeker families, charity gift collections for families struggling to afford a meal, and regular sewing, knitting and chat events. Her events attract hundreds of residents of all nationalities together.

Simon
is a social housing tenant

Simon, his wife and children had to move out of their privately rented home but came across the concept of part-buy, part-rent option (shared ownership) at just the right time.

Simon, who has his own carpet business and Sarah, who is a District Nurse, are both avid volunteers and know what it takes to turn a neighbourhood into something more special.
